1. The game next to the net (Net Game)
There are a lot more points being decided here than you think. Good positioning close to the grid, especially in doubles, allows you to respond quickly, "drop" the ball and control the pace of the game. Master balance - neither too far forward nor too far back - and be ready for quick reactions.
2. Strike with control, not muscle
Everybody loves a good smash, but in pickleball the one who wins hits smart, not hard. Work on your technique - mostly drop shots, dink shots and lob shots. The more precise you are, the more you will dictate the game. And remember - a well aimed ball is worth more than 10 strong but erratic shots.
3. Footwork
Pickleball is not about standing still. Proper movement is the foundation of good defense and offense. Keep your knees slightly bent, always return to the "ready" position and think with your feet, not just the rocket. Poor positioning leads to mistakes, even with good shots.
4. Proper breathing = better game
Few people talk about it, but controlling your breathing helps you focus, stay calm under pressure and avoid unnecessary tension in the body. Try exhaling on the beat - it creates a rhythm and helps you stay relaxed and focused.
5. Game Reading (Game IQ)
It is the ability to "see" the next move before it is made. Observe the positions of the opponents, their weaknesses and repetitive movements. You'll start to predict where the next ball will fall - and that's the magic of advanced play.
💡 Remember: You can have the best racquet in the world, but if you don't work on these five skills, pickleball will remain just... a game. And it can be an art.
🎥 Bonus tip
Learn from the best - watch professional matches
There's no better way to raise your level than watching the pros play. Search YouTube for tournaments like PPA or APP and pay attention to their stance, strategy, drop shots and movement. Notice how they communicate in doubles, when they change rhythm, and how they capitalize on their opponent's mistakes. Just by watching, you'll start to think differently on the court.
